REALTOR® Safety

Below are steps you can take to protect your fellow real estate agents and their clients. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

  1. Emergency? Call 9-1-1 now.
    1. Anytime you are immediately threatened, or even if you feel uneasy about a situation, always call 9-1-1 immediately.
    2. Is there a suspect possibly still in the area? Do you have injuries? Is there physical evidence present? Call 9-1-1 immediately.
  2. Report non-emergency incidents to law enforcement.
    1. Real estate agents should always report to non-emergency incidents to law enforcement. In Lincoln, you can complete an incident report here. If the incident occurred outside of Lincoln, report to the proper jurisdiction.
    2. If an awkward situation makes you or another individual feel uneasy, the correct move is to report the incident. There may not be an immediate response; however, your peers appreciate your effort.
    3. Reports will tie together similar incidents and determine a pattern or identify an individual with a history of problems. Without the report, law enforcement is unaware of a developing situation.
  3. Internet-based crimes, including email scams, should be reported to the FBI. Start the process here.
  4. Additional information. Continually update law enforcement with new information. Do not post sensitive information on social media unless law enforcement consents. Social media sharing can sometimes jeopardize an investigation or spread unverified or sensitive information to the wrong individuals.
  5. Ensure your broker knows the situation, and if you feel other agents might be at risk, inform the RAL office as well. Unfortunately, RAL is not set up to respond quickly to safety situations. RAL is also limited in what information can be made available. Email the RAL Office or call (402) 441-3622 to report a non-emergency incident.

Note: RAL will assess each situation and, if deemed warranted, will create safety messaging advising members of the danger. Communication requests from law enforcement will be honored to the greatest extent possible; however, please understand that safety messages might exclude specific names or other identifiers (phone number, license number, etc.) unless law enforcement requests those details to be released. RAL will not knowingly publish false or unverified information. In some cases, details are not available to be circulated.
